In the Car, A Moment Transcendent

In the Car, a Moment Transcendent
                                    For G

May I say
Thank you
For yesterday
For you, for yesterday
For you yesterday
For when I suggested something and
You reacted, strongly very strongly
Not at all how I expected
Nor how I desired you to react

And when I said
I don’t think this is about me
When I said let’s take a moment

You did

Then you told me
That it wasn’t what I said
Or anyone else

You told me your frustrations
You told me your unhappiness
You told me your anger

May I say thank you
For trusting me
In exactly this way

I can’t change the world
Or where we are right now
But I can listen
And do what I can
Within the limits placed
By the way things are now

So thank you
More than I can say

It was not something
I could do at your age
It was something I had to learn
In very hard ways

To take a moment
And examine why I felt
All those things I felt

Even longer to learn that
I could say them out loud
And be heard

I heard you
I hear you

Thank you
For that moment of beauty
That I carry now
Forward into this day
